LEH, LADAKH, INDIA, 2011

Chris Chadwell delivering the lecture; Dr Wangchuk operating the equipment

Prior to my visit to Ladakh, I became aware that members of the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION for LADAKH STUDIES (IALS) would be welcome to give lectures during their stays - jointly for the HIMALAYAN CULTURAL HERITAGE FOUNDATION (HCHF).  This represented an ideal opportunity for me, as I doubt, given my limited finances, ever to be in a position to attend meetings of the IALS held in Ladakh (as was the case for the conference in 2015 - which I would have liked to speak at). So I volunteered my services (on a complimentary bases of course - funds are not available to pay for foreign speakers, or even contribute to their costs) to Dr Sonam Wangchuk, recently appointed local Secretary of the IALS and HCHF representative in Leh.  I had my lap-top with me and a digital projector was available.  So I was able to deliver a digital presentation FLOWERS and BIRDS OF 'LITTLE TIBET' (one of the names Ladakh is known by) - this being the topic likely to  be of greatest interest locally.

A diverse audience of Western tourists, volunteers working for NGOs and a group of trainee lamas (who arrived fashionably late) were most attentive and clearly enjoyed my 'lecture'.  And what a place to deliver it in - Lonpo House, attached to Leh Palace.  How many of you have lectured in a mdeiveal palace?  A wonderful experience.

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, 2000

I was invited to deliver a lecture at the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich by a researcher into the evolutionary biology of the genus PRIMULA.  The visit provided an opportunity to meet Dr Peter Edwards (by then a Professor at the Geo-Botanische Institute in Zurich), a plant ecologist who had been my tutor when I studied botany at the University of Southampton.
