To sow a seed is a NOBLE deed; PROPAGATION is CONSERVATION (as was rightly proclaimed by Professor Norm Deno, a retired Chemistry Professor, State College, PA, USA) - but one cannot sow seeds unless they are collected, whether in the wild or in a garden and ALL plants originally came from the wild! And just what is wrong in collecting seed? Yes, one SHOULD observe rules and regulations but legislation needs to make sense and achieve sound objectives. The idea that all laws introduced by governments are ultimately for the benefit of their own peoples or human-kind as a whole, is false. When they are not, they should be questioned.
RESPONSIBLE SEED-COLLECTION DOES NOT DAMAGE COLONIES OF PLANTS NOR THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE HIMALAYA (OR ANYWHERE ELSE), SO SHOULD NOT BE APOLOGISED FOR - NOR SHOULD THE INTEREST AMONGST A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF CONNOISSEURS IN THE CULTIVATION OF HIMALAYAN FLORA - THEY SHOULD BE PROUD OF SUCH A HOBBY, INDEED A GREAT DEAL OF GOOD HAS STEMMED FROM SUCH SEED COLLECTION.
PREVENTING SUCH PLANT ENTHUSIASTS (whose hobby involves a lot of time, effort and skill) FROM HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIMENT WITH GROWING MORE UNSUSAL PLANTS WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP CONSERVE HIMALAYAN FLORA (or floras of other parts of the world). IT IS THE EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE GAINED BY SUCH GROWERS WHICH e.g. ALLOWED CHRIS CHADWELL TO ADVISE THE ROYAL GOVERNMENT OF BHUTAN ON THE CULTIVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS USED IN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE. Genuine expertise in the cultivation of more unusual species of plant is urgently needed - yet the accumulation of such important knowledge and skills is being discouraged.
WHAT A PITY INDIAN BOTANISTS DO NOT POSSESS SUCH EXPERTISE - WHICH LEADS THEM, DURING GOVERNMENT-FUNDED 'CONSERVATION' PROJECTS, TO MISTAKENLY DIG UP SUPPOSEDLY 'RARE AND ENDANGERED' HIMALAYAN PLANTS, AT THE WRONG TIME OF THE YEAR, TRANSPORT THEM DOWN THOUSANDS OF FEET FROM THE MOUNTAINS, ONLY TO RAPIDLY DIE IN 'BOTANICAL' GARDENS - WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE GATHERED SEED INSTEAD (PLANTS CAREFULLY RAISED FROM SEED STANDS A MUCH BETTER CHANCE OF SURVIVING AT LOWER ELEVATIONS), IN THEIR NEGLIGENT ATTEMPTS AT 'EX-SITU' CONSERVATION......
IT IS THE SUPPORT AND BACKING OF PLANT ENTHUSIASTS IN THE WEST WHICH ENABLED CHRIS CHADWELL TO BUILD UP HIS BOTANICAL EXPERTISE ON THE FLORA OF THE HIMALAYA AND START (IN SPLENDID ISOLATION, NO FUNDING AND NO SUPPORT FROM INTERNATIONAL BODIES NOR UK BOTANIC GARDENS) HIS GUIDE TO THE 'FLORA OF THE WESTERN HIMALAYA' SEE: https://sites.google.com/a/shpa.org.uk/fowh/. SUCH A REFERENCE WEB-SITE IS URGENTLY REQUIRED AS INDIAN BOTANISTS (OPERATING LARGELY IN INTERNATIONAL ISOLATION) ROUTINELY MISIDENTIFY WESTERN HIMALAYA PLANTS AND FAIL TO SURVEY FOR THEM CORRECTLY - WHICH LEADS TO SPECIES BEING FALSELY CLAIMED TO BE 'RARE AND ENDANGERED' IN A MULTITUDE OF ARTICLES AND OTHER PUBLICATIONS - THOSE WESTERN HIMALAYAN SPECIES WITHIN C.I.T.E.S. ARE NEITHER RARE NOR ENDANGERED, WHILST THOSE WHICH ARE, HAVE BEEN ABANDONED...... SEE: https://sites.google.com/a/shpa.org.uk/main/c-i-t-i-e-s---reliability-of-some-submissions. It is ESSENTIAL that information submitted for inclusion in CITIES is accurate and reliable - if it is not, the whole thing is a FARCE.
THERE ARE PLENTY OF THINGS THAT ARE DAMAGING POPULATIONS OF PLANTS IN THE HIMALAYA, along with the well-being of local peoples (see: https://sites.google.com/a/shpa.org.uk/main/what-are-the-real-risks-to-himalayan-flora ). What is being done to address these REAL threats? Far easier to PRETEND to be doing something than actually taking action.....
IT STRIKES ME THAT GOVERNMENTS, SO-CALLED 'BOTANISTS' IN TOO MANY COUNTRIES AND THE MEDIA (local and international) ARE PRETENDING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE FLORA, ENVIRONMENT AND PEOPLES OF THE HIMALAYA ("CROCODILE TEARS"), INTRODUCING EVER INCREASING RULES AND REGULATIONS, WRAPPING THEM UP IN THE CAUSE OF 'CONSERVATION'. YET, NOT ONLY WILL THESE 'RULES', NOT HELP PROTECT OR CONSERVE HIMALAYAN FLORA (much the same applies in other regions of the world) - THEY WILL CONTRIBUTE TO DAMAGING IT...... This is MISLEADING and should be exposed.
CHRIS CHADWELL DOES GENUINELY CARE ABOUT THE FLORA, PEOPLES, AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE HIMALAYA - AFTER ALL HE IS THE LEADING AUTHORITY ON ITS STUDY, CULTIVATION AND CONSERVATION..... IF anyone reading this really cared themselves, they would wish to learn more and SUPPORT Chris' efforts!
CHRIS HAS DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO SUCH PROJECTS, SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW - HE PRESENTS ACCURATE AND TRUTHFUL, SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND EVIDENCE ON THIS WEB-SITE, YET HE HAS BEEN CONSULTED IN AN INTELLIGENT FASHION.
STRANGE OLD WORLD WE LIVE IN....
Having read through the above and consulted the other relevant pages of this web-site, what should the media be concentrating upon? Media, the world over MUCH PREFERS negative 'tabloid'-style reporting by those who cannot be bothered to undertake ANY proper research - IF they had the necessary skills and relevant training to do so in the first place. We should EXPECT better.
I clearly am from another age, expecting so-called scientists and 'journalists' to actually have expertise in the subjects they write (and nowadays, too often MISLEAD us) about!
Does this matter? I think so. Too many people TRUST and believe what they read in newspapers and nowadays on-line, from news organisations. From my areas of expertise, I can assure you that the vast majority of what is published in print and on-line is written by those with little or NO understanding of what they write about! This alarms me, as relatively few seem to realise this, instead BELIEVING that these individuals and the organisations they represent, conduct themselves professionally.
