The precise identification of Dactylorhiza orchids is often challenging - a number of the

country's leading orchid specialists have closely examined the population photographed

here between a coastal dune and golf course.

They are part of the Dactylorhiza majalis aggregate

beyond that, the variation is open to interpretation....... So just enjoy their beauty

This appears to be within Dactylorhiza incarnata. Several British subspecies have been recognised, though mixed populations and intergrading forms are not infrequent - this may be subspecies coccinea; they were found on dunes on the Welsh coast and are short
